UPHS – Marquette Heroes | Leanne Herrington, RN
January 09, 2026
What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a Registered Nurse in Pre-Admission & Testing at UP Health System – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My mom. My mom became a nurse later in life and I recall being so proud of her when she talked about school. She worked on the surgical unit at the old MGH with a great group of nurses who became some of her closest friends. She was proud of what she did and I wanted to do the same.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I prepare patients for surgical, endoscopic, interventional radiology and cardiac procedures. I educate patients on what to expect and how to properly prepare. I make sure the appropriate testing is done and the needed records are on the chart.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed here for almost 23 years as a nurse. I started in the staffing pool and worked there for a couple of years, then took a position on the cardiac/stepdown unit for about seven years, followed by 10 years in pre-op/post-anesthesia care (PACU). I have been in pre-admission testing (PAT) for almost three years.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The transition from paper charting to electronic charting and moving from the old facility to the new facility are probably the most memorable.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I love spending time with my family and working on my yard and home. My favorite local gem would have to be anywhere near the lakeshore.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I love the conversations I get to have with my patients and I absolutely love my coworkers. They make every day fun!
