What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a clinic LPN at Respiratory Medicine at UP Health System – Marquette
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I considered pre-med after high school, but life had other ideas. After working ten years in customer service and learning so much about people, I decided it was time to explore other avenues in this field. Nursing was a good fit.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I start the day reviewing any patient cases that need immediate action for the providers. Then I start looking at my patients who need biologic (specialty) medications. There is a process to obtaining these specialty meds, unlike other medications. I am also an advocate for patients in obtaining assistance from the drug companies if they have a high co-pay. Inhalers can have huge copays that are not conducive to people on a fixed income.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I am in my fifth year in this position. It is my first clinic job. I had worked for MGH for many years, then took a hiatus and did various jobs in the nursing field. This job popped up during COVID. I had the privilege of working with Dr. Auther Saari when I started and he was so generous with his knowledge. I will never forget him.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
We recruited three doctors and a PA. Dr. Karulf started a lung nodule program for diagnosing Lung Cancer using robotic bronchoscopy, and it was a big lift at first, but now we have developed a top-notch program.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I love spending time with my family, especially my grandson Sascha. As I have gotten older, home with my three cats is my favorite local gem.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
We have an office that is very cohesive and fun to work in. I feel I have good relationships with co-workers from other departments, though it is only by phone. UP Health System people are kind and hardworking.
