What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am a Health Information Management (HIM) Director at UPHS – Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

My inspiration for getting into healthcare came from a passion for helping others and a desire to have a meaningful, purpose-driven career. I was also drawn to the field’s diversity and the many opportunities it offers to grow and make a lasting impact in an ever-evolving industry.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

No two days are the same. That’s what’s so fun and exciting about the HIM field—it’s not the same day after day. I wear multiple hats as we have several different areas within the HIM department, release of information, chart processing, chart analysis, clinical documentation improvement and support. I analyze a lot of data from workflow to productivity to medical record compliance with governing agencies to identify areas for improvement, to name a few. I review policies and procedures and investigate a variety of instances that arise related to documentation, coding and even billing.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I have been employed here for 10 years. I started as a clinic office clerk, moved up to clinic medical record clerk, then was promoted to clinic office supervisor before making the jump to HIM Manager and finally HIM Director.

What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?

Changes are a regularity in HIM, but the biggest changes I have experienced thus far have been our transition to our new EMR, Cerner and our most recent transition to UKG/Oracle.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

Outside of work, I enjoy camping, off-road adventures and spending time with my family. A couple of my favorite local gems include the Autrain River and Stucko’s!

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

The compassion and teamwork of all employees here make this a special place to work. It feels like a community, a family. I get to see everyone coming together, day after day, to make positive changes to improve patient care.
