What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am the patient experience officer at UPHS – Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I took a circuitous route to getting into health care. My background is in biological sciences, and health care was not on my horizon with my first degree. After my own personal experiences with the health care system, I realized I wanted to take a more active role. I wanted to help impact the health and safety of others in a positive way. I chose a nursing career, which ultimately opened the door to the position I am in now.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

Like many in health care, I would say there is no “typical” day, and I completely agree. Every day brings a different opportunity to help, whether with staff, patients, family members or community members. The beauty of working in health care is that every person makes a big difference. Everyone is working together to deliver safe, compassionate care and support patients on their unique health care journeys.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I have been employed at UPHS – Marquette for five years. I started as a new graduate nurse in the staffing pool. I’ve also worked in the ICU, as an educator on the cardiac unit and as manager of the med-surg unit. I am grateful for every one of these experiences and have learned so much in each position.

What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?

Since I have been in this position, there have been leadership changes, which have been great opportunities to brainstorm new ideas and review ongoing programs with fresh eyes. There have also been major software changes, such as our new EMR system, Cerner, and upcoming software updates to streamline supply chain, finance and people services.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

My main interests are spending time with my family and friends. I am usually busy with my partner, kids and dog, along with friends and our vibrant community. I consider myself an avid gardener in the summer and a reader of many genres in the off-season. As for a favorite local gem, Lake Superior tops the list — though it’s a very long list.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

I enjoy collaborating with my coworkers to support optimal patient outcomes. Everyone works so hard every day to deliver the best care possible, and I am in awe of the kind, compassionate care I see daily. We all work together toward the goal of taking care of our community, and I am grateful to be part of that.
