UPHS – Marquette Heroes | Lisa McGowan, LPN

November 01, 2024

What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?

I am a licensed practical nurse at the UP Bariatric Institute in the Medical Office Building on Washington Street. I'm responsible for all prior authorizations and daily patient care.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

I have always enjoyed taking care of others. I became an aide when I was 18, and from there I went on to become an LPN.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

I arrive at work at 6:30 am. I get organized and begin completing prior authorizations. I also take patient phone calls and assist with rooming patients, and make sure all supplies are ordered.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I have been employed at UP Health System for five years. I have always worked as a nurse at the Bariatric Clinic.

What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?

I was always a geriatric nurse and I decided I wanted to finish out my nursing career in a clinic and that was a big adjustment. We also just moved into a brand-new office.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

I enjoy working, exercising and photographing Lake Superior. My favorite place is the beautiful Lake Superior.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?

I work with a great team and I have learned a lot working alongside Dr. Erica Griffin.
