What is your role at UP Health System – Marquette? 

I am a Senior Surgical Technologist and Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Specialist at UP Health System – Marquette. 

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare? 

My mom was a nurse for many years, and I was always fascinated with her job. I knew I wanted to work in healthcare, but I wasn’t sure of where I would fit. I found surgical technology, and I knew instantly that I wanted to work in the operating room.   

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field? 

A typical day for me can be a lot of different things. As surgical technologists here at UPHS – Marquette, we work in all the different surgical specialties. I specialize in cardiovascular surgery; however, I could be doing an open heart in the morning and then a spinal fusion in the afternoon. I also enjoy helping those who make our jobs possible. I love to work in our Central Sterilization department when I have time. I also enjoy working with my manager, Beth Riley, on various projects to help our department. I love the challenge that this field gives me, and I learn something new every day. I am privileged to work alongside incredibly skilled surgeons and advanced practitioners.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position? 

I have been here for a little over three years and I have worked in the same position.  

What are some of the significant changes you have experienced in this position?

I started in this field in 2014 at a hospital in Lafayette, IN. I have worked with so many different surgeons and have learned more than I thought possible.   

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

I have five children and most of my time is dedicated to them. I enjoy doing crossword puzzles and crocheting when I have some downtime. My favorite local gem would probably have to be Jackson’s Pit in Negaunee. 

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette? 

I enjoy the people I work with. Since moving here in 2020, I have met some fantastic people who care so much for this community. I enjoy the team effort that we have in the operating room. We are all here to take the best care of our patients and we help each other whenever possible.
