UPHS – Portage Heroes | Mary LaBeske, MSN, RN, CCRN, CNML

What is your role at UP Health System – Portage?

I am the Director of Emergency Services at UP Health System – Portage.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

My mother told me I would be a nurse from the get-go! Although I wasn’t as convinced as she was— a series of events I experienced as I was growing up made it evident that nursing was the right career choice for me, and I still believe this is true to this day.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

I’m not sure there’s any such thing as a “typical day” as things rapidly change in the Emergency Department (ED). The first thing I do when I walk in the door is talk with the team (providers, nurses, and others who pitch in when needed) to get a feel for the day from the people who know what’s happening. My priorities are to promote a safe and enjoyable work environment, support the people I work with, and do what I can to ensure we have what we need to provide the best care possible to our patients and their families.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I’ve been a nurse for over 33 years but have only been at UPHS – Portage since November 2022. Before coming to Portage, I worked in several nursing roles at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. I started as a staff nurse in acute care, then spent 24 years working in critical care as an educator, supervisor, and clinical director, with my last two years as a consultant in Risk Management. I enjoyed my time in lower Michigan but decided it was time to head back home to be closer to family and friends and try something new.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

Things seem to change by the minute in the ED. Due to steadily increasing patient visits and the need to board critical patients for extended times, we're in the process of expanding our department by three beds to best serve our community. Although it’s exciting, this in itself will bring on a new set of challenges.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

I enjoy meeting new people, boating, golfing, and playing pickleball. To me, the beauty of the Upper Peninsula is one of the best-kept secrets.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?

I love the people I work with; from day one, they’ve made me feel welcome. I’m proud to be a member of the Portage team, and in particular, the Emergency Department.
