Randy Schwemin Named UP Health System – Marquette 2023 Mercy Award Winner

June 14, 2023

UP Health System – Marquette is proud to announce Randy Schwemin, LPN, has been recognized as the hospital’s 2023 Mercy Award Recipient. The Mercy Award recognizes one employee from each of Lifepoint Health’s hospitals who profoundly touch the lives of others and best represents the spirit and values on which the company was founded.

The Mercy Award is an annual recognition program established in 2002 to honor the life and contributions of Scott Mercy, Lifepoint’s founding chairman, and chief executive officer. The award is considered the highest honor a Lifepoint employee can receive.

“At UP Health System – Marquette, we share Lifepoint’s commitment to making communities healthier, and we recognize this is supported by the good work and service of our employees both on and off the job,” said Gar Atchison, chief executive officer. “We are extremely proud to recognize Randy for her efforts on behalf of our patients and our community. In her many roles, she goes above and beyond to support fellow healthcare staff and ensure every person she encounters receives the highest level of care and compassion.”

Randy works as a licensed practical nurse at UP Medical Group - Family Medicine | Lakewood in Harvey. She is passionate about teaching her patients to care for themselves and being proactive in their healthcare. She extends that same passion to her colleagues by encouraging a learning environment and being a dedicated member of the team. Randy also supports our organization by being a teacher for new emergency medical technician (EMT) classes.

"I am most impressed with her dedication to the overall human experience, demonstrated through the work she has done in our clinic and positions outside of our facility. Randy worked for the Trillium House, a hospice house that provides a caring residence at the end of life. Equally challenging, she has worked at Teaching Family Homes, the largest private child welfare organization in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, assisting troubled children and families. It takes a very special person to work in either of these specialties—Randy has done it with grace and compassion," stated Atchison.

Randy brings her passion outside of our walls and has actively volunteered for many years to support the health and well-being of our community. She has been a volunteer firefighter and EMT and has worked diligently to support services for Medi-Flight patient transport. Randy truly cares for her community. Whether it is during an emergent situation, a struggle with family life, or helping an individual pass peacefully at the end of life, her heart is prepared to take care of her patients.

Each hospital winner, including Randy, will be considered for Lifepoint’s 2023 company-wide Mercy Award. The company-wide winner will be announced later this year and honored during a ceremony in Nashville, TN, to which Randy and all hospital winners are invited to attend.
