What is your role at UPHS – Portage?
I am a Food Service worker in the Cafeteria at UP Health System – Portage.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I have a Health Education degree from Northern Michigan University. But my mother, Shirley Kommes, was my biggest inspiration. She worked at Portage View Hospital for 16 years and she encouraged me.
What's a typical day like for you?
No two days are the same. I interact with patients and staff when I take their meal orders or deliver their meal trays to their rooms. I really enjoy that. It is very gratifying to help people in need.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been at UPHS – Portage since late August of 2022 and stayed in the same position. However, I learn something new each and every day!
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
In the short time I have been here at Portage, my coworkers have become like family to me and Heather Aubin, our supervisor, is awesome.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work, I love to spend time outdoors with my husband and our two dogs. I also enjoy reading. My favorite hobby in the Keweenaw is picking agates and eating a wonderful pasty.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
I enjoy helping others and spreading kindness and I am able to do just that. It is my goal each day to help make someone's day just a little better by lending a hand, an ear, a smile, or a kind word.
