UPHS – Portage Heroes | Kayla Hakala, RN
June 27, 2022
What is your role at UPHS – Portage?
I am a registered nurse (RN) and soon will be an RN at PortagePointe full-time.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I always wanted to be able to help those in need. I consider myself to be very empathetic and compassionate — it gives me all sorts of joy to be able to help and care for others. My sister has also been a big inspiration for me to become a nurse. She recently graduated from nursing school and encouraged me to follow in her footsteps.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
A typical day for an RN at PortagePointe is ensuring the safety of all residents. We process orders, pass medications, perform assessments, and so much more behind the scenes. Each day is different and I really enjoy that.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I started out as an Elder Associate at PortagePointe in 2018. From there, I transferred to the inpatient unit. In May of 2022, I graduated from nursing school and decided to come back to PortagePointe as an RN.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
I feel like the biggest change would be the relationships with the other elder associates. In the past, I worked directly with them, but now I am delegating tasks to them and have different responsibilities.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I love listening to all kinds of music, including pop, rock, 70's/80's, and more. I do not have a favorite local gem, but I do love getting Ambassador pizza.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
I love how everyone works together to get the job done, no matter what the situation is. We have each other's back and have the same goal of Making Communities Healthier.
