What is your role at UPHS – Portage?

I am the Express Care Clinical Specialist at the Houghton clinic.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

It’s been a long time coming. In the year 2018, I got involved with the National Ski Patrol at Mont Ripley and knew that healthcare was the career for me. After finishing my Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) course I started taking classes at Gogebic and I am now in my final year of the nursing program. Someday I hope to combine my passion for the outdoors with my healthcare career.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

A typical day for me involves rooming patients and taking vitals and understanding the patient’s medical history. From there it can go in many different directions depending on the diagnosis and treatment. Never does a day look the same and I found myself really enjoying the variety that comes with the job. I really enjoy getting to know people who live in the area.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I have worked at Portage for a year and a half. I originally started as a CNA at PortagePointe and later on moved to Express Care in April as an LPN.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

When I made the switch from PortagePointe to Express Care, I took on a very different role in patient care. My current position has given me so much room to grow and learn as I continue my education as well. The biggest changes were the adjustment to my daily routine and the patient care I am providing.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What/where is your favorite local gem?

When I am not at work or being a student, I try to spend as much time outside as possible. In the summer I enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing, while during the winter I can be found either downhill or cross-country skiing. The UP is full of local gems, so it’s hard to pick just one. I’d have to say it’s a tie between the Kaleva’s big breakfast and Kurt’s Korner pizza. If you haven’t had either, you must try one! Lastly, if you feel so bold you can have the big breakfast as brunch and finish the day off with a pizza from Kurt’s Korner.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?

I love my coworkers and the environment I get to work in. I also enjoy the patient interaction and the opportunity to help those in my community in a unique way.
