What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am the Program Director of Rehabilitation at UP Health System – Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I was initially a business major when I started at Michigan State University but decided that was not my calling. My grandmother, who was a very important person in my life, mentioned that she met a speech pathologist recently and thought the profession sounded very interesting. I learned more about it and quickly switched to that major. I knew right away I made the right change, and still feel that way today.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Every day is different. I manage physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapists throughout the hospital, as well as the integral support staff. It requires a lot of flexibility to be available for the team as needed, as well as managing the regulatory components of the rehab unit.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have worked here for nearly 6 years. I started in September 2015 as a PRN speech pathologist, then moving into a full-time position on the rehab unit. In October 2018, I was fortunate to accept the position of Program Director.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position
I took over as director during the process of planning for the move to the new hospital. I had to quickly catch up on the planning process and felt very fortunate to be part of this historic event.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I enjoy time with my family and my 2 dogs, and love to travel. I just recently started to camp, and I love the beach and kayaking. Wetmore Landing is my favorite beach and was the location of my wedding almost 4 years ago.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I love working in a facility that is such a big part of the community. The team here is so knowledgeable has such a family feel. I’m proud to tell people I work at UPHSM!
