UPHS — Marquette Heroes | Savannah Koronka, LPN
February 05, 2021
Savannah Koronka, LPN on the Cardiac Unit at UP Health System – Marquette.
What is your role at UP Health System – Marquette?
I am an LPN on the Cardiac Unit and the Instructor for the Strictly Rhythms certification course.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I am a second-career nurse, having spent about a decade as a human resource manager in the automotive industry. I had thought about becoming a nurse since my early twenties but the push to go ahead with it came from watching my Daddy, my biggest role model, go through an abdominal aneurysm repair with amazing cardiac nursing staff taking care of him. It took a few years to figure out how to change careers and go back to school as a very non-traditional student, but there is nothing I would rather be than a cardiac nurse.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
One thing I love about my job is how unique each day is. As an LPN, I work alongside an RN to provide care to patients, prep them for procedures, give medication, collaborate with our therapy staff, communicate with providers, and support family members.
It’s a busy unit, but also such a fun, tight-knit group to work with. Every day brings something new to see or learn about. I also teach the Strictly Rhythms course along with Hospital Supervisor, Kelly December. Together, we offer this two-day course once a month for new employees as well as employees from hospitals in the region.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have worked here for almost three years, starting as a Telemetry Technician while in LPN school. I moved into my current position this past fall after graduating school, passing my National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), and receiving my license.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
It has been a unique journey to begin working as an LPN during COVID-19. During this pandemic, I’ve seen my unit transform to take care of our patients, constantly learning about new medications and treatments as we have learned more about COVID-19.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I am currently in school to complete my RN, so that takes up a lot of my time, but I love spending time with my husband, Eric, an EMT who also works here, and our four dogs and cat. I’m also a passionate baker and cookie decorator, as well as a frequent Target-shopper.
My favorite local gem is our local roller derby league, Dead River Derby. I have been a volunteer, official, skater, and bench coach – and cannot wait for derby to come back when COVID-19 is more under control!
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I love the teamwork, especially in the Cardiac Unit. We are all so busy but also so willing to help each other both inside and outside of work. I often tell new employees and students that while I am super biased, we really are the best group here – I mean that with all of my heart.
