UPHS – Marquette Heroes | Kim Dunlap-Madosh

January 08, 2021

Kim Dunlap-Madosh is the Director of Surgical Services.

What is your role at UP Health System – Marquette?
I am the Director of Surgical Services, which includes Pre-Admission and Testing, Outpatient Surgical Services, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, Operating Room, Sterile Processing Department, and Endoscopy.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I have wanted to be a nurse since I was 3 years old – my Mom being my inspiration.  She is a registered nurse and held many leadership roles during her career. I remember loving to hear the stories she told about her day.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I am not sure I have many “typical” days. I love what I do – it is never boring and after all these years, I can usually learn something new every day. I typically arrive at 0630 – with my first task of the day checking to see if the call crews worked and if we have what we need to run the day. In Perioperative Services we always must be prepared for any emergency that walks through the door as well as take care of the patients who are scheduled. I work with my team members and physicians to ensure patients are properly prepared for their procedures; ensuring that we have the people, supplies, equipment, and implants that we need, and that we have everything timed appropriately to make the day run smoothly and get patients the care they need efficiently.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been at UPHS — Marquette for 4 years and came here from UPHS — Bell to be the Director of Surgical Services.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The technological changes in surgery have been amazing.  We recently completed our first DaVinci Robot cases – so now we are entering another new era of technology that can help improve care for patients.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
My husband and I enjoy mountain biking, paddle boarding and cross-country skiing.   I also love to quilt and need to make more time for that. There are so many local gems here – we are very lucky, but my favorite is the lakeshore near Little Presque Isle.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
I love that we are the regional medical center and level 2 trauma center for the patients of the Upper Peninsula. I am so proud of the work that we do here. Coming back home to take care of “Yoopers” has been my main career goal since I came here as a staff nurse after graduating from college in Minnesota. UPHS – Marquette has allowed me to fulfill that goal.
