UPHS – Marquette Heroes | Britney Ekdahl

What is your official title?
Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department.
What was your inspiration for getting into health care?
I went into healthcare because I thought I’d be an OB nurse; I always loved babies and I wanted to help in that aspect. But then I went to school and gained interest in the emergency room. I like the fast-paced environment and how you never know what’s coming in through the door.
How has your role changed with the pandemic?
Life is returning to the new normal in the emergency department. Luckily my team and I are prepared and ready to care for our community when they need us. COVID-19 is still in our community at lower levels; however, we are prepared with the appropriate PPE and precautionary measures to keep our team and the community safe.
What is a typical day like for you?
Every day is different. I come in, get my report, and then depending on how many patients there are, I either help everyone catch up or manage our caseload. I also triage patients and make sure we’re organized and have the equipment we need in the department.
What are some of your interests outside of work?
I love summer, so all outdoor activities interest me. I love to bike, go to the lake, and I have a stand-up paddleboard. I also like to walk my pup and be outside as much as I can.
What is your favorite part about working at UPHS – Marquette?
My co-workers. They’re just great. They’re helpful, funny and just make the days here easier. Having a good group that all gets along certainly makes the day go a lot smoother.
