UPHS – Bell Heroes | Melanie Suk, MLT

What is your role at UPHS – Bell?
I'm a medical lab technician at UP Health System – Bell.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My background started in analytical lab science. About 10 years ago, I started working as a pharmacy technician, and I loved it. After that, I started wondering how I could get into healthcare but still continue working in a laboratory.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Most days, I am back in the lab processing different specimens received (blood, urine, stool, etc.) I am able to work in each department as my schedule rotates, so each day is a little bit different. We can do blood counts, coagulation testing, chemistry levels, blood transfusions, urinalysis, and some in-house serology testing. There are some days I help with drawing blood as well.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I started working at Bell in 2020 following a 6-month internship I was completing for my MLT certification through NMU. I have been working in the lab ever since.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
We are constantly updating policies to improve workflow and keep safety precautions in place. A couple of years ago, we made the switch to have all cultures sent out to our reference lab, and I have been helping our team adjust to the new process.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I recently gave birth to my son last November, so much of my time lately has been spent navigating the challenge of becoming a mother while also working. I was lucky enough to switch my schedule to 4 days a week, so now I am able to spend more time at home. My sister recently moved in with me and my husband to help us out. This summer, we plan to explore the Upper Peninsula waterfalls together.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Bell?
I really enjoy working with all of my coworkers. I appreciate the sense of community you feel working at UPHS – Bell. Being able to spend time working in the lab but still getting to experience a little bit of the patient care side makes me feel like I am able to make a difference in someone's healthcare journey.
