What is your role at UP Health System?

I am a phlebotomist at UP Health System – Portage. I perform outpatient and inpatient blood draws, as well as community draws. I also conduct DOT drug screenings and breath alcohol testing.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

I got into healthcare because I lost my mom at a young age and wanted to do something that would help other people.

What's a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?

I take care of floor draws when needed and assist outpatients who come in for lab work and testing. I meet people of all ages, each with their own needs and requiring special care. My day goes by quickly because of the variety of work I do.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I started working in June 1990 at Copper Country Medical Center. I began part-time in medical records and trained as a phlebotomist. Working in different areas helped me understand the clinic setting and the importance of diagnostic testing, including lab work and X-rays. In 1995, we went through the hospital merger.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

Collection methods have changed over the years. At one point, we sent samples to Quest Diagnostics, and later we ran tests in the clinic’s basement. Computer systems changed several times, which required adjustments, but change makes us stronger. Billing systems also evolved, making accurate diagnosis codes especially important for lab testing.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?

I enjoy hiking, traveling and rock hounding. I also enjoy going to thrift shops for special treasures. I love spending time with my family and my 3-year-old German Shepherd, Jack. I love going to Copper Harbor and Misery Bay. I love Jampot, so many good choices there.

What do you enjoy most about working at UP Health System?

I enjoy working with the people in our departments. It feels more like working with a family, and everyone looks out for each other.
