What is your role at UPHS – Marquette?
I am a clinical documentation specialist nurse at UPHS – Marquette.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I witnessed family receiving healthcare as a child, and that sparked my interest. I have always enjoyed caring for others in any capacity I can.
What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
I review inpatient charts for integrity. This means most of my day is spent reading through charts and clarifying diagnoses. We are also involved in the HARMs process—in hospitals, HARMs usually refers to the Hospital-Acquired Risk Management System (or Hospital-Acquired Risk Measures/Monitoring). It’s a structured process hospitals use to identify, review, and reduce patient safety risks, particularly hospital-acquired conditions (HACs) or adverse events that occur during care.
How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been employed here since 2002. I worked for one year on the oncology floor, 16 years in the operating room, and have been in this position for nearly seven years.
What are some of the big changes you've experienced in this position?
Our new Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and our new software tool.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I love spending time with family and being at our camp on a local lake.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The people. Each place I have worked has brought new, wonderful people into my life and they have kept work fun and enjoyable.
