Walk Safe this Winter with UP Health System – Portage

December 07, 2022

Winter in the Upper Peninsula is filled with joyful outdoor activities, heartwarming comfort foods, and annual traditions with loved ones – but winter also brings seasonal challenges of its own including winter walking. Here are some helpful safety tips to keep you safe, injury free, and healthy during the freezing and snowy weather.

Assume all wet, dark areas on pavement are slippery and icy

With cold temperatures, it is important to consider and approach with caution all wet and dark pavement areas in case they are slippery or icy. Some of the most common winter injuries involve slipping or falling on icy surfaces — like sidewalks or stairways. Keep your balance by walking slowly and with smaller steps — you may feel safer that way.

Walk safely like a penguin

A common phrase you may hear throughout the winter months is to “walk like a penguin.” This helpful tip starts with pointing your feet out slightly just as a penguin would. Spreading your feet out while walking on ice or snow helps to increase your center of gravity. It is also suggested to have a little bend at the hips to have your center of gravity directly over your feet as much as possible. Lastly, extend your arms out to your sides to help maintain your balance. Walk safely like a penguin in this winter wonderland.

Keep your hand out of your pockets

Walking with your hands in your pockets decreases your center of gravity and balance. With cold temperatures, it's natural to want to put your hands in your pockets to help brave the cold. However, there are benefits to keeping your hands out of your pockets while walking — including helping to break your fall with your hands if you do slip, maintaining your balance, and allowing your muscles to be more relaxed as your balance and center gravity is maintained.
