April 4, 2022
What is your title and role at UPHS – Portage?
My role is to prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the elders at PortagePointe. From time to time I will also bake when needed.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
At first, getting into healthcare, I was pretty nervous about it. However, my mom is a nurse at UPHS – Portage and encouraged me to take a step out of my comfort zone and join PortagePointe. I am very grateful she encouraged me because I’ve met some wonderful people here.
What is a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
My typical day usually starts by doing dishes for the morning cook, maybe helping get drinks and food for elders. Once the morning rush is finished, we begin to prepare for lunch and dinner. At the end of the day, I make sure the kitchen is clean and will help out with elders if it is needed
How long have you been employed here?
I have been here for just over six years and I have always been in the kitchen but worked different shift times.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
It has helped me to get more comfortable with my ability to cook. I have realized I have a true passion for it and it’s all thanks to this opportunity.
What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I love to read comics, play video games, and enjoy being out in the woods.
What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Portage?
The elders are my favorite part of the job. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing some wonderful people through these last six years and knowing I get to be a part of their lives even for such a short period is very rewarding.
